Acht fictieprojecten van filmmakers uit India, de Filipijnen, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesië en de diaspora krijgen intensieve ontwikkelingssteun.

QueerFrames Screenwriting Lab breidt in 2026 zijn bereik uit door verhalenvertellers uit heel Zuidoost-Azië en de diaspora te verwelkomen. Het initiatief, gericht op opkomende queer, trans en non-binaire filmmakers, heeft acht fictie-speelfilmprojecten geselecteerd voor zijn vierde editie.

Geselecteerde filmmakers en diverse vertelstijlen

Het cohort bestaat uit Alec Berame en Joshua Caesar Medroso uit de Filipijnen, Saurav Mahind en Sanju Kadu uit India, Minh-Anh Vo Dinh uit Vietnam en Canada, Megan Teo uit Singapore, Kurnia Alexander uit Indonesië en Rachel Leyco uit de Verenigde Staten. Elk project plaatst queerness centraal en verkent thema’s als identiteit, intimiteit, mannelijkheid, verbondenheid en persoonlijke vrijheid in genres variërend van liefdesverhalen en thrillers tot horror en dramakomedies.

Voorbeelden van projecten zijn Berame’s geopolitieke drama “Hisap Sebatang Before Ciao! (Each/Other)”, Vo Dinh’s horrorgetinte “Anglerfish”, Teo’s bokssverhaal “Pack” en Leyco’s loterij-dramakomedie “Winning”. Andere titels gaan over zakkenrollerende zwervers, banden in zwemlessen, achtervolgingen om familieschulden en terugkeer naar de geboorteplaats.

Programma en fysieke onderdelen

De editie van 2026 begint met een fysieke screenwriting-retraite in Hua Hin, Thailand, van 23 september tot en met 2 oktober. Op 3 oktober volgt een Industry Day in Bangkok, georganiseerd met de Franse ambassade in Thailand, Alliance Française Bangkok en de French Regional Audiovisual Cooperation. Virtuele sessies lopen door tot maart 2027.

Financiers en mentoren

Netflix en het Franse Instituut in India zijn de belangrijkste financiers, samen met Purin Film Fund in Thailand en Momo Film Co in Singapore. Mentoren zijn onder meer producer Anup Poudel, Berlinale-directeur Tricia Tuttle, filmmaker Isabel Sandoval, regisseur Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke, scenarioschrijver Gazal Dhaliwal, Momo Film Co-chef Tan Si En en de terugkerende docenten Vishnu Sinha en Paromita Dhar.

With this year’s expansion into Southeast Asia, QueerFrames is bringing together a wider community of storytellers who are pushing beyond familiar narratives and exploring queer lives across cultures, genres and lived experiences. Our hope is to build not just stronger projects, but lasting connections and infrastructure that enable these filmmakers to thrive.

Some of the most powerful stories come from places and experiences that have been left out of the frame. QueerFrames offers writers the space to develop those stories with courage, specificity and creative freedom.
