Yellow Veil Pictures verwerft Noord-Amerikaanse rechten op John Boorman-documentaire

De nieuwe film onderzoekt de chaotische productie van Exorcist II: The Heretic en de opkomst tot cultstatus

Yellow Veil Pictures heeft de Noord-Amerikaanse distributierechten verworven voor Boorman and the Devil, een documentaire die terugkijkt op de moeilijke productie van John Boorman’s Exorcist II: The Heretic.

Bioscoopuitbreng begint deze augustus in New York

Het vervolg uit 1977 op de originele Exorcist deed het bij release slecht aan de kassa en bij de critici, maar ontwikkelde later een trouwe aanhang onder genrefans. Yellow Veil Pictures brengt de documentaire in première in New York op 28 augustus in het Quad Cinema. Een bredere release in Los Angeles en landelijke uitbreiding volgen op 4 september.

Venetië-première scoort perfect bij critici

Regisseur en producent David Kittredge presenteerde het project in 2025 op het Filmfestival van Venetië. De film heeft momenteel een score van 100 procent op Rotten Tomatoes.

Regisseur enthousiast over nieuwe distributeur

Kittredge verwelkomde de deal in een verklaring. “I am beyond thrilled that Yellow Veil has come on board to help us share this story with a larger audience,” zei hij. “Like myself and the rest of our team, they’re huge cinema-lovers. It’s so exciting that a film which is not only a love letter to John Boorman, but also to ambitious filmmaking, will be handled by people who share the same passions that our team shares.”

I miss big, ambitious filmmaking that takes huge risks. In 1977, John Boorman took an enormous creative and commercial swing with The Heretic which didn’t connect with almost anybody at the time—but now we can look back and appreciate how big creative swings are what going to the movies is all about. Boorman is one of the greatest filmmakers that has ever stepped behind a camera, and I’m so happy to be telling the story of the one film that not only nearly destroyed him, but forever changed the way he made films.

Bekende medewerkers sluiten zich aan bij het project

Kittredge produceerde de film samen met Travis Stevens, bekend van Jodorowsky’s Dune, en Jim Fall. De documentaire bevat onder meer bijdragen van Boorman zelf, Linda Blair, Louise Fletcher, Joe Dante, Mike Flanagan en Karyn Kusama. Andere filmmakers en critici belichten de blijvende cultstatus van het vervolg en de veranderingen die het teweegbracht in Hollywood.

Yellow Veil-oprichter benadrukt sterke festivalontvangst

De overname werd geregeld door Gregory Chambet voor WTFilms en door Hugues Barbier, Justin Timms en Joe Yanick voor Yellow Veil Pictures. Het nieuws komt terwijl Yellow Veil meerdere titels presenteert op de Cannes Market.

Criticus noemt documentaire een van de beste films over het maken van films

Deadline-criticus Pete Hammond prees de film in zijn recensie. “Not only is this docu entertaining, it is also a great primer on the film business, then and now, and is easily one of the best movies about the making — and unmaking — of a movie I have ever seen,” schreef Hammond.

Hammond haalde specifiek Boormans gedetailleerde herinneringen aan de productie op, waaronder een productiestop nadat zand in het gezicht van de regisseur was gewaaid en een ernstige koorts veroorzaakte. Hij memoreerde ook een beruchte sneak preview in Pasadena waarbij het publiek, dat een nieuwe Exorcist verwachtte, onbedaarlijk lachte en studio-executives achternazat toen die ongezien probeerden te vertrekken.
