Opkomende acteurs delen inzichten over hun vak, karakterontwikkeling en het aannemen van iconische rollen tijdens exclusief gesprek.

Het publiek kan dit awards seizoen rekenen op veel nieuw talent op het scherm. Variety bracht zijn 2026 10 Actors to Watch samen voor een levendig gesprek over acteren en werkwijze tijdens het Newport Beach Film Festival op 18 oktober.

Panel viert divers nieuw talent

Het evenement vond plaats in het Balboa Bay Resort. Gemodereerd door Variety in samenwerking met het festival, introduceerde het gesprek de laureaten van dit jaar: Jaafar Jackson van Michael, Inde Navarrette van Obsession, Ray Nicholson van The Mosquito Bowl, Esmé Creed-Miles van Sense and Sensibility, Mariana Di Girólamo van Wild Horse Nine, Rosalind Eleazar van Misty Green, Guitarricadelafuente van La Bola Negra, Summer H. Howell van Carrie, Ruth Madeley van Being Heumann en Joseph Zada van The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

Navarrette omarmt complexiteit in rol in Obsession

Inde Navarrette sprak over het tot leven brengen van Nikki. Ze wees op het beperkte bronmateriaal voor het personage en beschreef de vrijheid die het gaf om haar vanaf de grond op te bouwen.

It was really just my first opportunity where I kind of had the freedom, to a certain extent, to do whatever I could. I really find the complication of Nikki to be what is the most beautiful about her. And I find people come up and they talk to me about her — specifically women — say, ‘That is a character that I find myself in.’ Of course people like to laugh, but I find that there’s a complexity, not just in women, but in us as people, where we are multiple people, and that’s beautiful.

Jackson bereidt zich voor om Michael met zelfvertrouwen te vertolken

Jaafar Jackson besprak de voorbereiding die nodig was om zijn oom Michael Jackson te spelen. Hij richtte zich op het uitstralen van het zelfvertrouwen van een ervaren artiest in plaats van een debutant.

I just wanted it to come across as I’ve done films before. I didn’t want to be seen as a first-time actor. I wanted to be able to, of course, continue to learn, but have that presence and awareness of how to walk into a room, how to get pulled in any direction because it doesn’t always go as planned or what’s on the page. Something can happen the day of, and I was experiencing that, and I was glad I was able to prep for that and just to be in that space where Michael would do it, just to continue to be in the mind of Michael.
