Veteran artist Arnold Tsang is set to release the first chapter of his original manga series Azuki on September 17. The project marks the centerpiece of a larger universe he has developed since 2022 through Azuki Labs.
Tsang served as art director at Blizzard Entertainment, where he shaped the visual style and character designs for the hero shooter Overwatch. His contributions included concepts for Tracer and Kiriko before he left the company in 2022. Earlier in his career he worked at Capcom, and he co-founded Udon Entertainment, contributing to its Street Fighter manga line.
Tsang began Azuki with a manifesto in 2022. The world has grown through artwork, anthology shorts that introduce characters and establish its fantastical rules, and a trading card game. The manga serves as the central narrative thread.
The manga centers on sisters Shao and Rei. After Rei disappears through an ancient Gate that links dimensions, Shao becomes a relic hunter in search of answers. Her quest draws her into a larger conflict that threatens both sides of the rift. Shao is portrayed as a circumstantial hero who acts to protect her remaining family and inadvertently alters the world around her.
The story explores the consequences of passing through the Gates, where nothing returns unchanged. Shao confronts difficult choices that test bonds of trust and fate while Tsang's distinctive art style and color work highlight the connection between the sisters.
The first chapter becomes available for free on the official Azuki website on September 17 at 9 a.m. PT. Subsequent chapters will appear on the third Thursday of each month.
I'm incredibly excited to finally share this world with readers everywhere. Azuki is a story I've wanted to tell for years, and as a lifelong manga fan, manga was the medium I envisioned to bring these characters and this universe to life.
