The squad of Colonial Marines stands out as one of the most memorable elements in Aliens. Their tight-knit dynamic helped the sequel capture the spirit of the original while expanding the story in bold new directions. Now, actor Ricco Ross, who portrayed Private Frost, has shared how his character came to exist at all.
Cameron Rewrites Script to Add Ross to the Cast
During a panel at Big Lick Comic Con NOVA, Ross explained that he originally sought a different part in the film. James Cameron, still early in his career after The Terminator, offered to rewrite the screenplay and combine several smaller roles into one new character tailored for him. Ross recalled the conversation with a laugh, noting that Cameron was not yet the global figure he would later become.
You've got to keep in mind, James Cameron was not the James Cameron we know right now. And so he says, ‘Well, listen, you know what I can tell you I’ll do, I wrote the script, I will rewrite the script, and I’ll put these three smaller characters and make one character just for you.’ I said I would think about it, very cocky. He says, 'Well, do me a favor. Before you accept anything else, at least just come back and talk to me.'
Ross Turns Down Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket Offer
The choice grew more difficult when Ross learned he had also been cast in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket. Kubrick planned workshops to help shape characters and wanted Ross for an eight-week commitment. Cameron proposed a workaround that would allow Ross to finish the Kubrick shoot and join Aliens just one week late.
Ross took the proposal back to Kubrick and asked if an early release after eight weeks was possible. The director's response ended the possibility of doing both projects.
James Cameron says, I’ll let you come back and do Aliens, it only overlaps a week, I’ll let you come a week late, and you can do both films if Stanley Kubrick will release you after eight weeks. I go back to Stanley Kubrick, and I go, can you release me after eight weeks, and he goes no, and so I had to choose, and the rest is history.
Audiences ultimately benefited from the decision, as the Colonial Marines delivered one of the most iconic ensembles in science-fiction cinema. Aliens remains available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu.
