Kimi Antonelli heeft zijn eerste Formule 1-wereldkampioenschap voor coureurs veiliggesteld met een derde plaats in de Grand Prix van Mexico City. De jonge coureur van Mercedes was zichtbaar emotioneel toen hij het succes vierde met familie en teamleden.

Antonelli boekt historische zege te midden van sterke concurrentie

Max Verstappen van Red Bull won de race, terwijl Lewis Hamilton als tweede eindigde. De podiumplaats van Antonelli leverde de punten op voor de titel, een prestatie die eerder ook werd geleverd door kampioenen op dit circuit, waaronder coureurs van Ferrari, Graham Hill en Denny Hulme.

Vanaf de vierde startplaats won de twintigjarige coureur posities door een beslissende inhaalmanoeuvre op Charles Leclerc van Ferrari. Die actie bezorgde hem de podiumplek, waar hij zijn familie en Mercedes-collega’s omhelsde.

Jongste kampioen en eerste Italiaanse titelwinnaar in decennia

Antonelli is nu de jongste wereldkampioen in de sport. Hij is ook de eerste Italiaanse kampioen in 73 jaar, na 380 punten over 19 races te hebben verzameld, een totaal dat rivalen niet meer kunnen achterhalen in de resterende races.

It’s been an incredible season, and to share this podium with Max and Lewis is truly incredible. And yeah, looking forward to some more battles in the future. This weekend I did feel a bit more tense, but I’m just so happy, and happy that we got it done, and now we can enjoy the rest of the season.

Sterke auto en consistente prestaties leverden de kroon op

Antonelli benadrukte de sterke prestaties en betrouwbaarheid van het team vanaf het begin van het seizoen. De consistente resultaten stelden hem in staat om de titel agressief na te jagen, en hij uitte opluchting en vreugde dat het harde werk vruchten afwierp.

Very early on, we had such a strong car, and we were very consistent and put in the performance. I thought that we could have had a shot this year, and I’m really happy that we managed to clinch it all. It’s starting to get real, and I’m going to enjoy every bit of it.
