Quad Cities-presentator stapt uit het nieuws, bekritiseert gesaneerde berichtgeving en benadrukt plicht om publiek uit te dagen

Dustin Nolan, een bekend gezicht op de ochtendtelevisie in de Quad Cities, nam vrijdag emotioneel afscheid van KWQC met een boodschap die dankbaarheid voor de kijkers combineerde met een scherpe kritiek op moderne nieuwspraktijken.

Anchor kondigt vertrek aan na jaren bij station

Nolan vertelde het publiek dat hij ervoor had gekozen de nieuwsindustrie te verlaten. Hij uitte diepe waardering voor het vertrouwen dat in hem was gesteld tijdens zijn tijd bij het in Davenport gevestigde station, dat kijkers bedient in Davenport en Bettendorf in Iowa plus Rock Island en Moline in Illinois.

“I have chosen to step away from the news industry,” zei Nolan. “Before I say goodbye, I just want to say, I hope every one of you that’s allowed me to be a part of your mornings knows just how important that I have taken this job [and] how much it means to me that you’ve trusted me these past few years to bring you the news in the morning. I promise you, I’ve given you everything I have. I’ve never tried to be perfect, or what many think a newsman should be supposed to be, but I have always done my best to be transparent, bringing you the facts, and I’ve always been myself.”

Nolan verzet zich tegen gesaneerde berichtgeving

De anchor benadrukte dat lokale stations meer moeten bieden dan trending topics of verzachte berichtgeving die ongemak vermijdt. Hij stelde dat feiten essentieel blijven en dat journalisten de verantwoordelijkheid hebben om perspectieven te verbreden.

I also believe that we, as a local news station, have to be more than trends or sanitized news, because it makes people feel uncomfortable. That’s why the facts matter, and that’s why we do what we do here. We have to take people out of their bubbles and comfort zones and make them think about the world we all live in.

Persoonlijk eerbetoon benadrukt partnerschap met co-anchor Jenna

Nolan, die volgens zijn professionele profiel in 2022 bij KWQC begon, had speciale woorden voor zijn vrouw en collega-anchor. Hij beschreef het verlaten van het gedeelde bureau als het moeilijkste aspect van zijn beslissing.

“The hardest part of this job for me is the realization that I won’t be working with Jenna anymore, because she isn’t just the greatest co-anchor on the news desk, but she is the greatest co-anchor in life as well.”
