Sterrenrijke ceremonie in Peacock Theater eert D’Angelo en Lauryn Hill met krachtige tributes en reikt belangrijke prijzen uit.

De BET Awards 2026 leverden een avond vol sterren op in het Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, met energieke optredens, eerbetonen aan muzieklegendes en een gerichte prijsuitreiking.

Teyana Taylor en Clipse wonnen elk drie trofeeën, het hoogste aantal van de avond. Kendrick Lamar voegde toe aan zijn erfenis met een overwinning voor zijn samenwerking op “Chains & Whips” en zijn negende prijs voor beste mannelijke hiphopartiest. Olivia Dean won de prijs voor beste nieuwe artiest, terwijl Cardi B beste vrouwelijke hiphopartiest werd. Leon Thomas won beste mannelijke r&b/popartiest en Kehlani sleepte de prijs voor beste vrouwelijke r&b/popartiest plus video van het jaar voor “Folded” in de wacht.

Druski houdt de energie hoog als host

Comedian Druski presenteerde de uitzending en ging voluit voor zijn kenmerkende sketches, waaronder een openingsschets in megachurchstijl waarbij hij boven het publiek zweefde. Hij maakte grapjes over zijn Gucci-outfit en verwelkomde gasten zoals Tyler Perry, Stevie Wonder en Max B voordat hij het uitriep tot “de grootste nacht van de cultuur”.

Optredens vullen de avond

Muziek stond centraal met een openingsoptreden van T.I. en daaropvolgende shows van Kehlani, Don Toliver, Raye, French Montana met Max B en Rick Ross, Tems, Baby Keem en Cardi B.

Emotionele tributes aan D’Angelo en Lauryn Hill

Een ontroerend segment bracht hulde aan D’Angelo, die in 2025 overleed. Zijn kinderen introduceerden de performance, waarin Ari Lennox, Raye, George Clinton, Isaac Sharkey, Durand Bernarr en BJ the Chicago Kid klassiekers uit zijn repertoire brachten.

Lauryn Hill ontving de Living Legend Icon Award tijdens een allstar-saluut met Queen Latifah, Nas, Common, Doechii, Lizzo, SZA en the War & Treaty. Bij het in ontvangst nemen van de eer zei Hill: “I have always cared about the expression and the representation of the dignity of our people.”

Janet Jackson en Kelly Rowland reiken grote prijzen uit

Janet Jackson, gekleed in een 2Pac-T-shirt, reikte de Icon of the Year uit aan Teyana Taylor, die geëmotioneerd raakte tijdens de introductie. Kelly Rowland kende de Ultimate Icon Award toe aan muziekexecutive Sylvia Rhone.

What we know is this: Black creativity is one of the most powerful forces in the world. It has shaped culture and continues to show the world new ways to see and feel. That creativity deserves continued protection. Music needs us to stand up for it like never before. Because we are living through a time through massive technological change. The possibilities are super exciting. But we must stay as active on the tech side of music as we are on the soulful side. We make the algorithm, the algorithm doesn’t make us. We must honor the musician, we must compensate the creator. So let us celebrate music as the art form it is and let us make sure that the next generation of artists has the opportunity to create the songs that will change the world.
