Franse coureur verliest achterkant bij bocht 13 in FP2, rode vlag volgt; team plant snelle reparaties voor kwalificatie Belgische Grand Prix

Pierre Gasly kwam ongedeerd weg nadat zijn Alpine flinke schade opliep bij een crash tijdens de tweede vrije training van de Belgische Grand Prix. Het incident op Spa-Francorchamps zorgde vrijdag voor een rode vlag met nog ruim vijftien minuten te gaan in de sessie.

Incident in bocht 13

Gasly reed wijd op de uitgang van de linkerbocht 13. Hij leek de achterkant van de auto te verliezen, gleed door de grindbak en knalde tegen de bandenstapels. De klap rukte de achtervleugel van de A526 en veroorzaakte verder veel schade aan de auto.

Gasly blikt terug op productieve maar kostbare sessie

De Fransman noemde de dag ondanks de late tegenslag toch productief. "Overall, [it's] been a good day of testing," zei Gasly. "A lot of different parts tried across both cars, so now we just need to weigh what is good, what is the better of all these settings, and try to put it all together for tomorrow."

Hij voegde eraan toe dat hij nog probeert te begrijpen wat er precies gebeurde. "Just need to work on understanding what happened in FP2. Had a big snap [and] lost the car... it took a lot longer to recover and by the time I recovered, I was already off the track and I could not get it back."

"Not the end of the day we wanted, but for sure the guys are going to get it back together tomorrow and then we will focus on trying to get to the top 10," besloot Gasly.

Alpine bevestigt reparaties en positieve signalen over tempo

Alpine-managing director Steve Nielsen bevestigde dat Gasly ongedeerd was, maar dat de auto veel werk nodig heeft. Het team had die avond sowieso al een motorwissel gepland, wat de extra werkdruk voor de monteurs deels compenseert.

Pierre is fine, the car is not fine. We were changing the PU on that car tonight anyway, so while it's quite a long jobs list for the mechanics, half of it we were already doing. No problem to be ready for tomorrow.

Nielsen merkte op dat de ochtendsessie puur in het teken stond van dataverzameling. In de middag richtte het team zich op het pure tempo. Gasly reed een competitieve tijd die later werd geschrapt wegens track limits in bocht 4.

"The car seems to have a little bit of pace here, more so than the last couple of races. We just need to make sure we carry that through tomorrow," zei Nielsen.
