Acteur bespreekt nieuwe esthetiek, teamsteun en persoonlijke vastberadenheid voorafgaand aan de kerstpremière

Toen HBO de eerste afbeelding onthulde van Paapa Essiedu als Severus Snape voor de aanstaande Harry Potter-televisieserie, was de visuele verschuiving onmiskenbaar. Essiedu draagt dreadlocks tot op de schouders en een donkerder, meer eigentijdse gothic stijl die de traditionele geknoopte gewaden van het personage vervangt door een ritsleren jas en een wapperende oversized zwarte mantel.

Essiedu benadrukt doordachte samenwerking met de kostuumafdeling

Essiedu sprak over de nieuwe look tijdens de TIME100 Next Gala in New York. Hij benadrukte dat de esthetische keuzes het personage helpen definiëren. “I think the aesthetic is important,” zei hij. “I don’t know if style is necessarily at the forefront of my mind when generating the character, but I think the way he looks tells so much about who he is — and who he wants people to think he is. It’s all incredibly well thought through and collaborated with the incredible costume department.”

Acteur haalt kracht uit kritiek en steun van het team

Essiedu heeft eerder gesproken over de racistisch gemotiveerde doodsbedreigingen die hij na zijn casting ontving. Hij zei dat de vijandigheid hem heeft gemotiveerd om de rol volledig op te eisen. Collega’s van de Harry Potter-productie hebben hem stevig gesteund. “The whole team has been so supportive of me,” merkte Essiedu op. “Obviously, my priority is the work. I wouldn’t take this job on [otherwise], but I walk into it with open eyes. I understand the broad spectrum of what the reaction to what we’re doing means, and I take that mantle on with an open and full heart. I’ve also been blown away by a lot of the support and well-wishes and excitement.”

Opkomend talent geëerd op TIME100 Next Gala

Het gala erkende Essiedu als een van Time’s 100 opkomende leiders in business, entertainment, sport en politiek. De Britse acteur kreeg voor het eerst grote aandacht als de eerste zwarte acteur die Hamlet speelde voor het Royal Shakespeare Company in 2016. Hij won de Ian Charleson Award en kreeg twee BAFTA-nominaties voor rollen in “I May Destroy You” en “The Lazarus Project.”

Warner Bros. positioneert serie als streaminggebeurtenis van het decennium

Warner Bros.-executives hebben het project beschreven als de “streaming event of the decade.” Essiedu uitte trots over het voltooide werk. “I’m really proud of what I’ve seen so far,” zei hij. “There are so many people who worked so hard on this project — and who it means so much to. It’s been a long time coming. It’s been a long time that people have been saying a lot of things, and now’s the time for people to engage with what we made.”

Seizoen één gaat op eerste kerstdag in première op HBO Max

Het eerste seizoen, gebaseerd op “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” gaat op 25 december in première op HBO Max.
