ABC News national correspondent Stephanie Ramos will deliver a dramatic highlight for Walt Disney Co. this weekend. She plans to rappel down a wall live from Fort Campbell during a special Saturday edition of “Good Morning America.” Ramos, who has long served in the U.S. military reserves, adds an adventurous touch to the network’s Fourth of July coverage.
Executive producer Simone Swink described Ramos as “a badass” for the stunt. Swink oversees morning and overnight programming at ABC News and admitted the live descent makes her “a little bit nervous.” The moment forms part of a broader slate of spectacles rolling out across Disney platforms from Friday night through Saturday.
The ambitious programming results from a year-long effort. Seni Tienabaso, vice president of ABC News Live, recalled that the first planning meeting took place in April of the previous year. The project coordinates talent and production teams from across the company to deliver hours of live and curated content.
David Muir anchors key segments, including a rare look inside the Statue of Liberty on Friday night’s “World News Tonight.” Coverage continues overnight and into Saturday with additional hosts and special reports. Appearances are scheduled from MrBeast, Reba McEntire, Tim McGraw, Brandi Carlile and Nick Jonas.
Disney is leaning into live programming to attract larger audiences and advertising revenue in the streaming era. The July 4th push comes ahead of a busy stretch that includes the College Football Playoffs, the Oscars, the Grammys and Super Bowl LXI on ABC in early 2027.
Other networks are also marking the holiday with major productions. CNN pairs Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen, while Fox News Channel offers multi-platform coverage of America’s 250th anniversary. NBC News and CBS News plan primetime specials, and MSNBC recently staged a live event in Philadelphia.
Hosts including Linsey Davis, Lara Spencer and Sam Champion will anchor late-night hours from locations across the country. A special “Nightline” broadcast follows, and footage from “GMA” visits to all 50 states fills overnight slots. Saturday features an early-morning special led by Muir, the Ramos segment and ESPN’s annual Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. Ryan Seacrest hosts “Nashville’s Star-Spangled Bash” in prime time.
There is a lot more live than there is taped in this. We are curating every live shot, every bit of tape.
Swink and Tienabaso face demanding schedules, working late Friday and returning early Saturday. Tienabaso expects a continuous shift from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. The team remains ready to adjust rundowns quickly when correspondents deliver unexpected live moments from the field.
With all the feeds and live shots, we want to be able to tear up our rundown.
The effort was guided by Debra O’Connell, chairman of Disney Entertainment Television, and Almin Karamehmedovic, president of ABC News. They encouraged teams to work together and share stories more effectively. Success with this weekend’s programming could lead to similar large-scale collaborations in the future.
