De president beschrijft een spectaculaire avond met militaire muziek, flyovers en recordbrekend vuurwerk bij het Lincoln Memorial

Donald Trump heeft bevestigd dat hij de aanstaande viering van het 250-jarig jubileum van Amerika wil centreren rond een grootschalig rally in de hoofdstad. In een gedetailleerd bericht op Truth Social beschreef de president een avond met militaire optredens, luchtshows en wat hij het grootste vuurwerk in de geschiedenis noemde.

Trump schetst eerbetoon aan Amerika bij Lincoln Memorial

Het evenement staat gepland voor 4 juli bij het Lincoln Memorial en het Washington Monument. Het begint om 19.00 uur Eastern Time en omvat meer dan 300 leden van militaire bands, orkesten en ceremoniële eenheden die patriottische en klassieke Amerikaanse nummers uitvoeren. Trump zei dat het programma flyovers door topmilitair piloten en materieel omvat, waarna hij de hoofdtoespraak houdt.

De avond moet worden afgesloten met een ongekend vuurwerk boven de Reflecting Pool. Trump presenteerde de bijeenkomst als zowel een viering van nationale prestaties als een startsein voor de volgende 250 jaar van het land.

Evenement wijkt af van eerdere benadering bij tweehonderdjarig bestaan

De plannen vormen een scherp contrast met de viering van het tweehonderdjarig bestaan in 1976 onder president Gerald Ford. Op 4 juli dat jaar bezocht Ford Valley Forge in Pennsylvania, hield hij toespraken in Philadelphia en keek hij naar de tall ships in New York. Zijn instructies aan speechschrijvers verboden expliciet campagnetaal of partijdige verwijzingen, ook al zocht hij herverkiezing.

Artiesten trekken zich terug uit Mall-concertreeks na organisatiewisseling

Aparte zorgen zijn al gerezen onder artiesten. Verschillende artiesten, waaronder Morris Day en Young MC, trokken zich terug uit een geplande concertreeks op de National Mall die gekoppeld was aan een Great American State Fair. De terugtrekkingen volgden op de aankondiging dat de evenementen zouden worden georganiseerd door Freedom 250, een publiek-private entiteit opgericht door het Witte Huis. Die groep verving de bipartisane America 250-commissie die tien jaar eerder door het Congres was opgericht.

Aftraprally gepland eind juni

Trump gaf ook aan dat hij op 24 juni een aparte aftraprally houdt om de bredere reeks activiteiten rond het 250-jarig jubileum te starten.
