President zegt dat de bond de juiste keuze maakte om schorsing op te heffen terwijl UEFA de maatregel als ongekend veroordeelt.

President Donald Trump bevestigde maandag dat hij persoonlijk contact opnam met FIFA-president Gianni Infantino om een herziening te vragen van de schorsing voor één wedstrijd die aan de Amerikaanse spits Folarin Balogun werd opgelegd tijdens het World Cup.

Trump noemde de oorspronkelijke beslissing onjuist en zei dat het opheffen van de ban een grote smet op het toernooi heeft voorkomen. Hij voegde eraan toe dat hij FIFA-functionarissen had verteld dat hij de tackle niet als een overtreding beschouwde.

FIFA stelt Balogun-schorsing uit na contact met het Witte Huis

De aanvaller van U.S. men's national team kreeg een rode kaart voor een charge in de achtste finale tegen Bosnië en Herzegovina. Na berichten over lobby vanuit het Witte Huis nam FIFA de zeldzame stap om de automatische schorsing voor één wedstrijd voor een heel jaar op te schorten, waardoor Balogun kon spelen in de achtste finale tegen België.

De actie van de bond leidde direct tot verontwaardiging in de sport. België gaf aan juridische mogelijkheden te onderzoeken, terwijl verschillende prominente coaches de ommekeer publiekelijk bekritiseerden.

UEFA uit scherpe kritiek op FIFA-beslissing

De Europese voetbalbond UEFA bracht een fel geformuleerde verklaring uit waarin FIFA wordt beschuldigd van het overschrijden van een rode lijn. De organisatie noemde de stap ongekend, onbegrijpelijk en onrechtvaardig en stelde dat automatische schorsingen na rode kaarten niet discretionair zijn en uniform moeten worden toegepast.

Equally, such decision creates a precedent in the ongoing tournament, where similar situations will now require an equal treatment, to the detriment of the competition. Football is the most loved sport in the world because it is a beautiful game and is trusted because it is played everywhere with the same laws. A tournament is never a pure stand alone and, if the tournament in question is the World Cup, it has the power to drive positive or negative consequences on the game as a whole. We express our disbelief at such an unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision.

Verschillende media, waaronder de Associated Press, legden direct een verband tussen het Witte Huis en de ommekeer. Berichten wezen op een eerder telefoontje tussen Trump en Infantino over de kwestie.
