Taylor Sheridan haalt uit naar critici en Hollywood-executives in openhartige podcast-rant

Yellowstone-maker verdedigt zijn werkwijze, haalt schouders op over Emmy-negeringen en verklaart dat hij nooit terugkeert naar Los Angeles

Taylor Sheridan uitte felle kritiek op critici en executives uit de entertainmentindustrie tijdens een uitgebreid optreden in The Bill Simmons Podcast.

Sheridan verwerpt claims dat hij niet voor vrouwen kan schrijven

De 56-jarige showrunner ging in op terugkerende klachten over zijn verhalen. "The critics are going to come after me … I can’t write for women, all this nonsense," zei hij. Sheridan voegde toe dat hij critici bewust provoceert en geen behoefte voelt hun goedkeuring te winnen.

"The critics and me — I don’t care what they think, and it annoys the s–t out of them that I don’t care," stelde Sheridan. "I’ll be the first to tell you that there are things that I do that rage-bait them a bit, and this is one of them. Fuck ’em, honestly."

Maker hekelt studio- en netwerkleiding

Sheridan, wiens credits onder meer de hitserie Yellowstone en de aankomende Landman omvatten, richtte zich ook op beslissers bij studio’s en netwerken. Hij beschreef veel executives als voormalige medewerkers van de postkamer of stagiairs die via uitval zonder noemenswaardige schrijfervaring zijn opgeklommen.

"By the way, the studio executives and the network executives — these are marketing executives, for the most part. Or maybe they studied law or whatever. Then they came, got a job in the mailroom at CAA or WME, and hated that shit. So then they ended up as an intern at some network," zei hij.

Sheridan verlangt naar een vroeger tijdperk van creatieve vrijheid

De maker van Mayor of Kingstown zette het huidige klimaat af tegen eerdere decennia bij Paramount. Hij herinnerde zich een tijd waarin sterren als Steve McQueen werkten met studiohoofden als Bobby Evans en schrijvers en regisseurs met veel minder inmenging opereerden.

"It didn’t used to be this way … because writers were turned loose. Directors were turned completely loose," merkte Sheridan op. "There weren’t endless rewrites. There weren’t meetings with executives about tone and mood and all this nonsense."

Prijzen zijn geen doel voor Sheridan

Ondanks een reeks high-profile projecten met sterren als Kevin Costner, Harrison Ford en Helen Mirren, kregen Sheridans series beperkte erkenning in de prijzen. Hij maakte duidelijk dat trofeeën nooit deel uitmaakten van zijn plan.

Sheridan zweert nooit terug te keren naar Los Angeles

De schrijver, die op een ranch in Texas woont met zijn vrouw, actrice Nicole Muirbrook, en hun 16-jarige zoon, maakte zijn standpunt over Hollywood duidelijk. "The only way you’re getting me back to Los Angeles is if it secedes from the union and I’m drafted into the Army to take it back," verklaarde hij.

Sheridan zette Los Angeles af tegen New York, dat hij veel veerkrachtiger noemde. Hij vertrok recent bij Paramount na gerapporteerde botsingen met de leiding en tekende bij NBCUniversal.
