Zuid-Korea kiest drama als Oscar-inzending terwijl Netflix bioscoopreleases plant

Koreaanse regisseur Lee Chang-dong keert na acht jaar terug op het grote scherm met Possible Love, dat in première ging op het Venice Film Festival. Het verhaal draait om twee getrouwde stellen wier paden elkaar op onverwachte wijze kruisen.

Sterke cast draagt drama over verweven levens

De film heeft de gerenommeerde acteurs Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung en Cho Yeo-jeong in de hoofdrollen. Vroege reacties prijzen het gelaagde spel van het viertal, waarbij Jeon in het bijzonder wordt geroemd om haar vertolking van een personage dat streeft naar persoonlijke vrijheid.

Zuid-Korea kiest Possible Love als Oscar-kandidaat

De Korean Film Council heeft Possible Love gekozen als officiële inzending van het land voor de Academy Award voor Beste Internationale Film. Netflix, dat het project financierde en de internationale rechten bezit, bevestigde plannen voor een Oscar-kwalificerende bioscooprelease in Zuid-Korea, de Verenigde Staten in oktober en andere markten.

The cast of top South Korean actors here is well chosen, each of the four main stars given plenty to work with and delivering director Lee’s vision on the screen in this handsomely filmed and pertinent work that even those not familiar with this celebrated filmmaker’s pedigree will find much to admire.

It shows us a world where people feel lost after losing their livelihood, where individuals strive to connect with others despite differences of class and temperament, where tenderness ultimately has more power than arrogance.
