Acteur uit teleurstelling over Star Wars-ervaring terwijl hij rol als Peeves in HBO-adaptatie krijgt

Peter Serafinowicz verscheen onlangs in de Classic Clown-podcast en gaf openhartige reflecties op zijn tijd als stem van de Sith Lord Darth Maul in de film Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace uit 1999. Fysiek performer Ray Park bracht het personage tot leven op het scherm, maar Serafinowicz leverde de kenmerkende stem voor zowel die film als Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Serafinowicz beschrijft vroege teleurstelling over iconisch personage

De acteur gaf toe dat de ervaring hem ontnuchterde. Hij herinnerde zich dat hij al onzeker was over het ontwerp en de algehele impact voordat hij het eindproduct zag. Toen de film in première ging, sloeg zijn reactie om in pure afkeer.

It was weird. This character Darth Maul… I don’t know what I thought. The design of it… I wasn’t that into it. When I saw the film it was the biggest disappointment of my life at that point. It really was. I mean, have you seen it? It was so exciting that even being in it .. doing this thing, what I thought would be this iconic thing. Just unimaginable.. I guess it sort of is [iconic]. I suppose.

Hij herinnerde zich ook een memorabele uitwisseling met regisseur George Lucas tijdens de opnamesessies. Lucas vergeleek hem naar verluidt met de legendarische stemacteur achter Darth Vader.

James Earl Jones has got the best voice of any human ever, right? Then, suddenly there I was with George Lucas, and he was like saying, ‘Well, Peter, you’re the new James Earl Jones,’ and I was like, ‘Fucking hell, am I? Then why are you paying me such shit money, George?

Later vervangingen en blijvende Star Wars-aanwezigheid

Serafinowicz liet de rol na de live-actionfilms los. Stemacteur Sam Witwer nam het over voor de animatieserie The Clone Wars en hernam de rol later in de Disney+-serie Maul – Shadow Lord, die eerder dit jaar in première ging.

Serafinowicz krijgt rol in aanstaande Harry Potter-televisieserie

Naast zijn Star Wars-geschiedenis breidt Peter Serafinowicz zich uit naar een ander groot franchise. Hij is gecast als Peeves the Poltergeist in de aankomende Harry Potter-televisieserie van HBO. Het ondeugende spookpersonage, populair bij boekfans, ontbrak opvallend genoeg in de oorspronkelijke filmadaptaties.
