Nour Films verwerft Franse rechten op Katharina Rivilis’ Cannes-première ‘I’ll Be Gone in June’

Door Wim Wenders gesteund debuut verkent tiener zelfontdekking in post-9/11 New Mexico door de ogen van een Duitse uitwisselingsstudent

Luxbox heeft een Franse distributieovereenkomst gesloten voor het debuut van Katharina Rivilis “I’ll Be Gone in June”, dat wereldpremière maakt in de sectie Un Certain Regard van Cannes. Nour Films verzorgt de release in Frankrijk later dit jaar en de salesagent deelde een exclusieve eerste trailer met Variety.

Verhaal volgt Duitse tiener in post-9/11 New Mexico

Het Engelstalige drama presenteert een buitenstaandersperspectief op de Verenigde Staten in 2001 vanuit het dorre landschap van New Mexico. Het volgt de 16-jarige Franny, een Duitse uitwisselingsstudent die arriveert in het rustige woestijnstadje Las Cruces. Ver van huis navigeert ze door ongemakkelijke schooldagen, intense hitte en slapeloze nachten tot ze Elliott ontmoet, een lokale jongen wiens stille melancholie overeenkomt met de hare. Terwijl het land reageert op de aanslagen van 11 september, begint er een onverwachte band tussen hen te ontstaan.

De Duitse actrice Naomi Cosma maakt haar speelfilmdebuut in de hoofdrol. Ze wordt vergezeld door een groep jonge niet-professionele acteurs uit New Mexico die Rivilis lokaal castte. Road Movies, het Berlijnse productiebedrijf opgericht door Wim Wenders, leidt de internationale coproductie met Duitsland, Zwitserland en de Verenigde Staten.

Regisseur put uit persoonlijke ervaring voor eerste speelfilm

Rivilis volgde een acteursopleiding aan de Universiteit voor Film en Televisie “Konrad Wolf” in Potsdam-Babelsberg voordat ze overstapte naar theater-, film- en televisie werk in Duitsland en daarbuiten. Later studeerde ze regie aan de Duitse Film- en Televisieacademie Berlijn, waar ze de korte films “Ariana Forever!” en “Day X” voltooide. Beide korte films werden op grote schaal vertoond op internationale festivals en wonnen verschillende prijzen, waarbij “Day X” in 2021 een nominatie voor de Student Academy Awards kreeg. Haar korte film “Rondo” uit 2022 ging in première op de Berlinale.

De nieuwe film markeert haar eerste speelfilm en put rechtstreeks uit haar tijd als uitwisselingsstudent in New Mexico.

Wim Wenders prijst precisie en poëtische stijl

I have rarely produced films by other directors, let alone debut feature films. (Come to think of it, ‘Radio On’ by Chris Petit was the only other one, and that was in 1979!) But ‘I’ll Be Gone in June’ was an exception, from the very beginning, when Katharina Rivilis came to Road Movies with her script. Its quality, together with her successful short films, totally convinced us, Léa Germain and me. I’m extremely proud of the result actually, I was blown away, when I saw the first rough cut. The film was done with great care, certainly beautifully shot and the acting was impeccable, given that Katharina was working mainly with young non-actors. ‘I’ll Be Gone in June’ is graceful and poetic, yet done with remarkable precision. One could say that Katharina invented her own cinematic language, and that is exactly the kind of film that gives me hope for the future of cinema.

Nour Films benadrukt politieke resonantie

Katharina Rivilis’s striking debut ‘I’ll Be Gone in June’ transforms a story of exile, adolescent longing and disillusionment into a quietly political portrait of post-9/11 America, where the Bush-era climate of fear, suspicion and patriotic tension already seems to foreshadow the fractures of the Trump years. Luxbox-programma bevat meerdere Cannes-titels

Luxbox vertegenwoordigt dit jaar een brede selectie van Cannes-titels, waaronder “Ashes” van Diego Luna in de Officiële Selectie Special Screenings, “Red Rocks” van Bruno Dumont in Directors’ Fortnight Special Screening, “Double Freedom” van Lisandro Alonso in Directors’ Fortnight, “Six Months in a Pink and Blue Building” van Bruno Santamaria Razo in Critics’ Week In Competition, en “For the Opponents” van Federico Luis in de Officiële Korte Film Competitie, naast de speelfilm van Rivilis.

Uitgebreide financiering ondersteunt internationale coproductie

De film wordt geproduceerd door Road Movies, Wolfskind Films en 8horses in samenwerking met Simbelle Productions en filmscience. Producenten zijn onder meer Léa Germain en Wenders, samen met Clemens Köstlin, Rivilis, Andrea Kuehnel en Vincent Savino. Coproducenten zijn Olga Lamontanara en Simon Jaquemet. Executive producers zijn Lauren Melinda, Helena Sardinha, Rafael Thomaseto, Neil Kopp en Anish Savjani. Het project ontving steun van Hessen Film & Medien, Eurimages, de German Federal Film Board, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Westdeutscher Rundfunk, het Federal Office of Culture, Creative Europe MEDIA, het German Federal Film Fund, het New Mexico Film Office, ARRI International Support Program en FOCAL Stage Pool Ernst Göhner Stiftung. DCM verwierf de Duitse distributierechten voorafgaand aan het festival.
