Het tijdige drama van Andrius Blaževičius over een scheiding te midden van de Russische invasie in Oekraïne is de Litouwse oscar-inzending.

Andrius Blaževičius’ derde speelfilm, “How to Divorce During the War,” is door Litouwen gekozen als officiële inzending voor de Academy Award voor beste internationale film tijdens de 99e oscars.

De film won de regieprijs in de World Cinema Dramatic Competition op het Sundance Film Festival. De Noord-Amerikaanse bioscooprechten zijn verkocht aan Zeitgeist Films in samenwerking met Kino Lorber, met een release op 21 augustus.

Verhaal speelt zich af tegen de achtergrond van de invasie

Het verhaal volgt de succesvolle zakenvrouw Marija en haar man Vytas in Vilnius. Hun beslissing om uit elkaar te gaan valt precies een dag voor Rusland in 2022 de grootschalige invasie van Oekraïne begint. Het stel worstelt vervolgens met de echtscheidingsprocedure terwijl ze te maken krijgen met vluchtelingenstromen en persoonlijke midlifecrises.

Sterk festivalcircuit en internationale verkoop

De film draaide in meer dan dertig festivalcompetities en won prijzen in Hongkong, Las Palmas en Uruguay. New Europe Film Sales, onder leiding van Jan Naszewski, verzorgt de wereldwijde distributierechten, met verkopen in meerdere landen.

Critici prijzen de humor en scherpte

A drily witty, subtly searing comedy. Both empathetic and surgical as it examines both partners’ attempts to sublimate selfish angst into social activism.

Officiële selectie en motivatie van de commissie

Het Lithuanian Film Centre maakte de keuze dinsdag bekend na een besluit van de National Selection Committee, die goedkeuring kreeg van de Academy. Commissievoorzitter en filmmaker Ignas Miškinis benadrukte de actuele combinatie van persoonlijke relaties en geopolitieke gebeurtenissen.

One of the key reasons we chose this film was its relevance and sense of proximity – it brings together universal human relationships and geopolitical reality, as suggested by the title itself. The presence of war can be felt in the background of the film – something happening right next to us – while at the same time, it speaks about universal experiences: anxiety, tension, uncertainty about the future, the breakdown of a relationship and its impact not only on two people but also on the entire world around them. These themes are recognizable regardless of country or context.

Productieteam en internationale coproductie

Marija Razgute van M-Films produceerde de film in Litouwen. Coproducenten zijn Red Lion in Luxemburg, Feline Films in Ierland en Bionaut in Tsjechië. Belangrijke crewleden zijn cameraman Narvydas Naujalis, editor Anna Johnson Ryndová, production designer Greta Vileikytė en componist Jakub Rataj.

Het project ging door het New Nordic Films Co-Production Market en het Berlinale Co-Production Market. De 99e Academy Awards-ceremonie staat gepland voor 14 maart 2027.
