Josh Heuston neemt de rol van Justin Kohl op zich voor het eerste seizoen van de Prime Video-serie gebaseerd op de Off Campus-boeken van Elle Kennedy. Zijn versie van het personage wijkt af van de footballspeler die in het originele verhaal met Garrett Graham wedijvert om de affectie van Hannah Wells.

Muziek staat centraal voor Justin in de tv-adaptatie

In Kennedy's debuutroman The Deal drijft muziek belangrijke momenten voor verschillende personages, vooral Hannah. De serie breidt dit element uit door Justin frontman te maken van de band After Hours. Zijn crush op Hannah zet haar ertoe aan om met Garrett te fakedaten, waarna er echte gevoelens tussen hen ontstaan.

Heuston wilde Justin menselijker maken dan een standaard campusarchetype. Hij beschreef het personage als enigszins emo en angstig, maar doordrenkt met oprechte emotie.

I guess he’s a little emo and angsty in a lot of ways, but I just wanted to give him a heart in it, where it’s not, I guess, the typical bad boy on campus sort of thing. I wanted people to feel for him and empathize in the fact that he’s just trying to follow his heart and see where that takes him, and as opposed to just being the totally typical archetype.

Samenwerking aan een nummer leidt tot emotionele spanning

Nadat Hannah Justin vertelt dat ze gevoelens heeft ontwikkeld voor Garrett, werken de twee verder aan een nummer bedoeld voor haar optreden op de Pop Music Showcase. Het evenement biedt een kans om prijzengeld te winnen voor haar collegegeld aan Briar University. Hun samenwerking bereikt een hoogtepunt en valt daarna uiteen wanneer Justin het nummer zingt met zijn toegevoegde teksten. Hannah vraagt om een frisse start en Justin spoort haar aan om moeite te investeren en risico's te nemen met haar schrijven.

That scene in particular, he’s talking about the music, but he’s not just talking about the music. He’s very much saying like, ‘I’ve come to the table and put my heart on the line, and you more or less promised it and then took it away in a lot of ways.’ So the music is, I guess, a metaphor for the fact that he’s like, ‘Look, you brought me into this little romance, and then you ran away the second I got comfortable enough to follow you in it,’ which is kind of heartbreaking in a little way.

Heuston beheerst instrumenten voor authentieke optredens

Ter voorbereiding leerde Heuston gitaar en piano. Hij brengt covers van artiesten als Ariana Grande, P!nk en One Direction, plus het originele nummer Yellow Haze. De laatste twee sprongen eruit als zijn favorieten tijdens de opnames.

I am One Direction. I didn’t really have any music experience at all beforehand. So that was the big undertaking of this project, but the performing stuff on stage was my favorite stuff. It was a little taste of what it would be like to be a real musician, which I’m grateful that I got to have that experience.

Justins toekomstige romance blijft open in de adaptatie

Hoewel afgewezen door Hannah, gaat Justin later in Kennedy's boekenserie op zoek naar romantiek. Of die verhaallijnen in toekomstige seizoenen verschijnen, is nog niet besloten. Heuston toonde zich hoe dan ook enthousiast over het project.

I guess we’ll see what happens with all that stuff, but I had a great time filming this with everyone. I love this show and the cast, and I’m very proud of what we made.
