During an interview with E! News alongside costar Stavros Halkias and director Matt Johnson, Sessa explained his surprise. He initially pictured Bourdain primarily as a television personality from Food Network shows. In reality, the chef's earliest drive centered on writing.

I didn't realize that, early on, his focus was writing and he really had a passion for that. That was the thing that he saw himself doing and believed was his destiny.

— Dominic Sessa, Exclusive interview with E! News

Sessa noted that Bourdain's path through restaurant kitchens proved essential. Those experiences in New York and earlier ultimately enabled the storytelling that defined his later success, even if writing remained his core passion.

Director Chooses Bourdain's Formative Summer for the Story

Bourdain died by suicide in 2018 at age 61. His 2000 memoir Kitchen Confidential launched his writing career after years as a chef. The film Tony deliberately narrows its scope to his youth rather than his later television fame.

We thought we could understand what it was like to be a young, struggling kid attempting to become Anthony Bourdain. So that's why it's this summer and nothing else.

— Matt Johnson, Interview with E! News

The story follows Bourdain during one summer working in Provincetown, Massachusetts, highlighting the struggles of a 19-year-old trying to find his direction.

Halkias Reflects on Stepping Into a Mentor Role

Stavros Halkias plays a mentor figure named Stavros opposite Sessa. The casting prompted the 37-year-old comedian to reconsider his own stage in life.

It was fun to realize, 'Hey man, you're not a kid anymore. You're being cast to be the guy who helps the kid.' So stop thinking about yourself as a kid. You're a grown man, grow up, for God's sake.

— Stavros Halkias, Interview with E! News

Halkias said the experience arrived at a moment when he had already begun thinking along similar lines. It encouraged him to reassess his relationship with his work and the people around him.

Tony Heads to Theaters in August

The film opens in limited release on August 7 before expanding nationwide on August 21. Additional details about Bourdain's life appear throughout the article's accompanying photo gallery.

Bourdain was born June 25, 1956. He began his culinary journey as a dishwasher in Provincetown during a summer break from Vassar College and later graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in 1978. He worked at notable New York restaurants before turning to writing in the 1990s and publishing Kitchen Confidential in 2000.

His television career began in the early 2000s with A Cook's Tour on Food Network, followed by Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations on the Travel Channel starting in 2005. He later hosted CNN's Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown from 2013 onward. The chef received multiple Emmy nominations and a Peabody Award for expanding viewers' understanding of global cultures and cuisines.
