Ben Shapiro heeft gereageerd op de tijdelijke stopzetting van de opnames voor de immigratiethema Pawn Shop-film geproduceerd door Daily Wire. De productie is hervat in Livingston, Montana.

Shapiro legt politieke motieven achter stopzetting uit

In The Ben Shapiro Show verklaarde de commentator dat de stadscommissarissen de productie op straat puur om politieke redenen hebben stilgelegd. Hij wees op een functionaris die dat openlijk toegaf.

I’m not willing to sacrifice the resources of the safety, the security of the mental health of our community. Absolutely not. This wasn’t a Hallmark film. This wasn’t, you know, Christmastime in Livingston, and it wasn’t a romantic story.

Shapiro verwierp het idee dat filmmakers zich moeten aanpassen aan het door lokale functionarissen gewenste type verhaal. Hij stelde dat het Eerste Amendement dergelijke inhoudsgerichte beperkingen op expressie verbiedt.

Well, I mean, I wasn’t aware that we had to fulfill your idea of what the story required. In fact, I’m fairly certain the First Amendment says precisely the opposite of that… That is content discrimination openly performed and a violation of the First Amendment.

Shapiro bekritiseert tegenstanders om ondermijning van vrije meningsuiting

De commentator beschuldigde lokale functionarissen en demonstranten ervan via juridische middelen opvattingen te onderdrukken die hun niet aanstaan. Hij noemde die houding hypocriet ten opzichte van vrije expressie.

These people are not even hiding the ball. These censorious jackasses just want things they do not like barred by law. It is that simple. They don’t give a sh*t about free speech. They don’t like free speech. Free speech is just for them. It is not for the people who oppose them.

Shapiro wuift claims van demonstranten weg en belooft voltooiing film

Shapiro verwees naar verzonnen verhalen die door linkse demonstranten over de productie werden verspreid. Hij suggereerde dat de verhoogde tegenstand het doel en bereik van het project alleen maar versterkt.

The more they’re entertained, the more justified our mission proves itself to be. We are obviously right over the target. When you try to shout us down, you only make us more powerful.
