Netflix-veteraan keert terug om de scripted comedy van de Britse omroep te leiden na vertrek van Jon Petrie

De BBC heeft Chris Sussman benoemd tot nieuwe directeur comedy. Hij volgt daarmee zijn functie als directeur scripted series bij Netflix UK op en was eerder hoofd comedy bij BBC Studios.

Sussman krijgt de leiding over de comedy-opdrachten van de omroep en rapporteert rechtstreeks aan chief content officer Kate Phillips. De functie maakt hem verantwoordelijk voor wat de BBC omschrijft als de grootste producent van originele Britse scripted comedy in het Verenigd Koninkrijk.

Sussman volgt Jon Petrie op na vijf jaar

Hij neemt het over van Jon Petrie, die in juni na vijf jaar vertrek aankondigde om creative director te worden bij Hat Trick Productions. Sussman begint volgende maand, met Emma Lawson als interim-directeur in de tussentijd.

Uitgebreide ervaring bij verschillende omroepen

Tijdens zijn periode bij Netflix droeg Sussman bij aan de Britse scripted-programmering met titels als Man Versus Bee, Baby Reindeer, Stay Close, Bodies en Black Mirror. Eerder bij BBC Studios leidde hij zowel de televisie- als radio-comedy, waaronder series als This Country, Inside No 9, W1A, Famalam, Upstart Crow, Ladhood, Two Doors Down, Vic & Bob’s Big Night Out en Mrs Brown’s Boys.

Daarnaast zorgde hij voor de eerste opdrachten van het productiebedrijf bij Apple met Trying en bij Amazon met Good Omens.

Huidige hits en aankomende projecten

In zijn nieuwe functie beheert Sussman lopende series als Ludwig, Amandaland, Small Prophets, Ann Droid, Here We Go en Black Ops. Nieuwe opdrachten op zijn lijst zijn onder meer Bill’s Included, Reluctant Vampire, Better Later, Hopley Hall, Push en Opening Up.

What a dream job! I’ve loved BBC comedy since I was a young boy listening to tapes of ‘Hancock’ and ‘The Goons,’ and the thought of trying to make more classics for a new generation to fall in love with is a daunting but irresistible one.

After a highly competitive interview process I’m delighted that Chris will be taking up the role of the BBC’s Director of Comedy. With a wealth of experience across multiple indies and broadcasters he has the smarts and skills needed to lead us into a very funny future.
