Teamleiders prijzen de focus van het duo op collectief succes te midden van intense kampioenschapsstrijd

Mercedes-coureurs Kimi Antonelli en George Russell blijven verwikkeld in een strijd om de coureurstitel, maar het team benadrukt dat hun relatie positief en productief blijft.

Mercedes kent sterke start van 2026-seizoen

Veel waarnemers zagen Mercedes als favoriet voor het Formule 1-seizoen 2026. Het team leverde al vroeg resultaten, met een overwinning van Russell in Australië. Antonelli volgde met een reeks opeenvolgende zeges en werd de jongste coureur die na ronde drie in Japan aan de leiding ging in het kampioenschap.

Antonelli staat nog steeds bovenaan, terwijl Russell derde is na een paar mindere weekends. Teamfunctionarissen zeggen dat beide coureurs het grotere geheel in het oog houden.

What has been particularly impressive is how they work together. George and Kimi obviously want to beat each other, because that's the nature of the sport, but it's a healthy rivalry. There are no games being played and nothing being hidden. They're both focused on making the most of the opportunity the team has given them. Of course they care about their Drivers' Championship positions, but first and foremost they're focused on delivering for the Constructors' Championship and helping the team succeed.

Resta prijst concurrentie tussen coureurs voor teamresultaten

Plaatsvervangend technisch directeur Simone Resta onderschreef de positieve beoordeling. Hij wees op de kracht van het duo en hoe hun prestaties de resultaten in uiteenlopende omstandigheden hebben verbeterd.

We are fortunate to have a very strong driver pairing. George and Kimi are both incredibly quick. Both have taken pole positions this year and both have won races. Across different weekends and different circumstances, they have each delivered outstanding performances for the team. That is a tremendous asset. The competition between them continually raises the standard, and ultimately that allows the team to achieve better results.
